Over the past few weeks, several news reports have shed light on three Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks occurring in different areas in the United States. Each of these Outbreaks (New York City with multiple locations, The LA Fitness Gym and the Las Vegas Outbreak at the Rio Hotel) have resulted in multiple victims who contracted the disease including one woman who died as a result of Legionnaires’ disease as part of the NYC Outbreak.

These three outbreaks continue the trend that we have seen over the last 15 years. Legionnaires’ disease is on the rise. According to a Dailymail.com article, the number of Legionnaires’ disease cases has risen 450% in the last 15 years. There are numerous theories regarding the contributing factors that have led to this alarming increase in the number of reported Legionnaires’ disease cases, most of which include the wide-spread growth of the legionella bacteria. The reason for legionella’s modern proliferation include the decreased use of chemical treatments, increased temperatures across the global as well as economic pressure on businesses to cut corners when it comes to the proper maintenance of their property.

Whatever the cause or causes, the rapid growth of Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks is concerning and show no signs of slowing down.
