An LA Fitness site in Niles, Illinois has been linked to two cases of Legionnaires’ disease according to the Illinois Department of Health. Again, according to the Illinois Department of Health, the Legionella bacteria had been found in the hot tub at the LA Fitness location. According to one user of the gym, many of the members are over 50 years of age. These members are more susceptible to acquiring the disease. At the same South Orlando location where two individuals contracted Legionnaires’ disease due to being exposed to the legionella bacteria, a cafe inside the LA Fitness has been ordered to cease operations. While the findings of legionella wasn’t enough to prompt officials to shut down the facility, the discovery of health violations including the presences of several live roaches at the cafe, led officials to force the cafe to close its doors. Two LA Fitness centers were under investigation for Legionella bacteria after a total of four club members were diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease. The fitness center located at 12700 South Orange Blossom Trail recently tested positive for Legionella bacteria. Now, the fitness center at 4792 Kirkman Road has also tested positive for Legionella bacteria. Both gyms were advised by the health department to hyperchlorinate the water and put filters on shower heads located within their facilities. The LA Fitness club located at 12700 South Orange Blossom Trail in Orange County, Florida is one of two LA Fitness clubs in the area that have been under investigation after members contracted Legionnaires’ disease. A few of the water samples taken by the Florida Department of Health from the Blossom Trail facility have now come back positive for Legionella bacteria. Four cases of Legionnaires’ disease among members of two different LA fitness clubs in Orange County, Florida has sparked the investigation of the gyms as the possible source of the bacteria. The spas and showers of both the facility on Kirkman Road in Orange County and the Orange Blossom Trail location in Hunter’s Creek were shut down pending the investigation, and notices were issued to club members last week about the signs and symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease. Over the past few weeks, several news reports have shed light on three Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks occurring in different areas in the United States. Each of these Outbreaks (New York City with multiple locations, The LA Fitness Gym and the Las Vegas Outbreak at the Rio Hotel) have resulted in multiple victims who contracted the disease including one woman who died as a result of Legionnaires’ disease as part of the NYC Outbreak. In Orange County, FL, 4 members of an LA Fitness gym have contracted Legionnaires’ disease. The Department of Health has begun investigating whether the spas and showers located at the LA Fitness location could have been the source of the legionella  bacteria.
