Four cases of Legionnaires’ disease among members of two different LA fitness clubs in Orange County, Florida has sparked the investigation of the gyms as the possible source of the bacteria. The spas and showers of both the facility on Kirkman Road in Orange County and the Orange Blossom Trail location in Hunter’s Creek were shut down pending the investigation, and notices were issued to club members last week about the signs and symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease. On December 20, 2016, a Complaint was filed in Lucas County Common Pleas Court by seven employees of Lucas County Department of Job & Family Services after the employees developed illnesses from exposure to Legionella bacteria. The cooling system within the company building located at 3210 Monroe Street, tested positive for Legionella bacteria. On Monday night, tenants of 1600 Sedgwick Ave in Morris Heights came home to a letter from the New York City Department of Health, notifying them that two tenants of the building had tested positive for Legionnaires’ disease. The two cases of Legionnaires’ disease were diagnosed about 12 months apart from each other. Routine testing of Mount Sinai Beth Israel hospital’s water system last month yielded positive results for Legionella bacteria in several parts of the hospital. Consequently, one patient at the facility developed Legionnaires’ disease. An employee stated on Wednesday night that the water containing the Legionella bacteria was within the hospital’s plumbing system. The hospital states they are taking action to eliminate the issue. Special filters have been implemented on sinks, shower heads, and ice machines throughout the facility. Water use has also been restricted.
