According to the Chief of Staff at the VA Pittsburgh Health System, Ali Sonel, the Legionnaires’ disease outbreak occurred because of faulty hospital testing methods and the inaccurate belief that safe levels of bacteria exist. Also, the VA Inspector General report shows that the VA kept poor records and that disinfectant levels were too low.
It was also recently announced that VA undersecretary, Robert Petzel, will be retiring in approximately a year. The spokesperson did not address the question of whether or not this decision was made in light of the highly public VA failure in protecting veterans at its facilities from Legionnaires’ disease.
