The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Presbyterian has gone to great lengths distancing themselves from the Veterans Administration after confirming three Legionnaires’ disease cases at its hospital.

Although there is currently no federal or state protocol about how to handle a Legionnaires’ disease outbreak like this, following the discovery of Legionella bacteria in the ice machines at Presby, CEO John Innocenti decided to have all 500 ice machines within the UPMC health system inspected rather than focusing just on Presby.

It is hoped that UPMC will implement disinfection methods not only for their ice machines, but also for their entire potable water system to preemptively prevent illnesses in the future as well.  Proper water management can prevent multiple water-borne pathogens from infecting unwitting hospital patients.
