A timeline of events could be very helpful for those trying to understand what happened during the Miami Valley Hospital Legionnaires’ disease outbreak. According to reports available to the public, the first important date is December 28, 2010 which is the date construction was finished for the southeast addition. As has been reported elsewhere, Legionella, the bacteria responsible for Legionnaires’ disease, is likely to grow during construction because there is no flow or a reduced flow of water which harbors the bacteria in the plumbing system.
The next critical date is February 3, 2011 when the first confirmed case of Legionnaires’ disease occurred at Miami Valley Hospital. Most if not all of the confirmed cases had pre-existing medical conditions including congestive heart failure and diabetes because they were in the new wing of the hospital which treats cardiac patients. It is very common for patients who contract Legionnaires’ disease to have similar pre-existing medical conditions. The second confirmed case was on February 17, 2011. The third confirmed case occurred on February 19, 2011 at the hospital. The fourth patient was diagnosed on February 20, 2011. Water restrictions were then implemented at the hospital on February 22, 2011, only after four confirmed cases had occurred. The water restrictions included not using any of the hot water provided by the hospital in showers or faucets. The normal transmission of the legionella bacteria is through the victim inhaling the bacteria from the aerosolized spray coming from the shower head or faucet. Patients were provided with bottled water and basins with hot water for their sanitary needs. The water temperature was also increased on February 22, 2011, and all lines in the plumbing system were flushed.
