According to news reports, Russell Paternostro, a 71 year old man who worked in the District Attorney’s office at the courthouse in St. Tammany Parish in Louisiana, has sadly passed away after contracting Legionnaires’ disease. Another employee of the District Attorney’s office tested positive for exposure to Legionella bacteria after becoming sick, but has since recovered. The State Department of Health and Hospitals visited the facility to investigate and to meet with leaders of the various departments with offices in the courthouse. St. Tammany Parish also hired a consultant to perform environmental testing to locate any potential problems. Results of the environmental tests are expected within 10 days, which will provide better insight into potential sources of the Legionella, and whether it was present at the courthouse. This will help explain how Paternostro may have contracted the Legionnaires’ disease that ended up taking his life.
