Ten people in Quincy, a city in western Illinois have died from Legionnaires’ disease following the identification of an outbreak at a veterans home in late August. Nine of the ten decedents were residents of the veterans home while the tenth was not associated with the facility.
The Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs said yesterday that it had plans to disinfect the home’s water system with chlorine, but the spokesman could not answer why remedial action did not happen more quickly.
As a precaution, residents at the veterans home have been restricted to bottled water usage and sponge baths.
