According to recent news reports, it was only after the third confirmed case of Legionnaires’ disease was found in a patient in March, 2011, at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Washington, that the hospital decided to test for the presence of the bacteria that causes the disease. Two other patients of the hospital already had confirmed cases of the disease in January, 2011. One of the patients with a confirmed case of Legionnaires’ disease died, but according to a hospital spokesman, Legionnaires’ disease was not the cause of his death. The CDC tested for the presence of legionella at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, which is the bacterium that causes Legionnaires’ disease, and found the bacteria in the hospital’s water system.
