According to the Daily Record in the United Kingdom, four Scottish gardeners have contracted Legionnaires’ disease through the compost. Currently, all four are in the hospital and two elder individuals are in intensive care. These four people were sickened by a particularly rare form of Legionella bacteria. According to Richard Othieno, an NHS Lothian public health consultant, this strain had never before been identified in man-made water systems.
Those working with compost are encouraged to wear masks to reduce potential exposure to Legionella bacteria.
