16 people have been diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease in the Greater Oporto area of Northern Portugal. Five of these cases have been admitted to the hospital and are being treated.
The source of the outbreak is unclear, however six cooling towers have been closed and are being disinfected; the exact location of these cooling towers have not been reported by the National Health Board.
Although 16 people living in the Greater Oporto area have been diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease, not all are believed to have contracted the illness there. Two people are believed to have been exposed while abroad.
