Two cases of Legionnaires’ disease have been confirmed at an elder care home in Baltimore. Both individuals were residents at the Apostolic Towers Apartments, a senior home with 149 units at 201 N. Washington Street.
The first case occurred in March 2014, and the second case was confirmed just last week; both required hospitalization.
The Baltimore City Health Department is currently conducting an investigation and said that the staff at the Apostolic Towers was cooperative and informed residents immediately. The potable water system will soon be tested for the presence of Legionella bacteria.
In light of the two laboratory-confirmed cases of Legionnaires’ disease, tap water usage is being restricted for at least two weeks; during this time residents will not be able to shower, consume, or brush their teeth using the tap water in the senior home.
