Three employees at Faltec Europe Ltd. have contracted Legionnaires’ disease within the last seven months and now a nearby resident is also suspected of contracting Legionnaires’ disease. All three employees are recovering at home after being hospitalized for their illness.
The resident who contracted Legionnaires’ disease lives near Faltec Europe Ltd., a car component business. Other residents living near the the company are now living in fear of also contracting the potentially deadly illness.
Laurence Kaye, a 72-year-old man whose allotment plot overlooks the factory, said “If Legionnaires’ disease is at the factory and is airborne, it can be blown in the wind in all directions. It is frightening.”
Faltec Europe Ltd. employs over 460 people and is currently under investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the environmental health team of Public Health England and South Tyneside Council.
