The number of Legionnaires’ disease cases reported in Frederick, Maryland this year has exceeded those of the past five years, according to an article appearing on FrederickNewsPost.com.  So far this year, 8 cases of Legionnaires’ disease have been reported, compared to 6 in 2010 and 2 in 2009.  Health officials are unsure of the reason for the increase, but do not attribute the cases to an outbreak.  Half of the cases were acquired in community living facilities, the article states, and at least one case was confirmed to have originated in Ocean City, Maryland.  Following the diagnosis of a Legionnaires’ disease case, the Frederick County Health Department conducts interviews and testing in order to pinpoint a source.
