VA Hospital Pittsburgh

Legionella was detected at the Pittsburgh Veterans Affairs unit in Oakland early last week on Oct. 7.  According to VA spokesman David Cowgill, the deadly bacteria were found in a “limited number” of plumbing fixtures in the building.

As a result of this finding, water restrictions were put in place and shock chlorination was immediately performed for both “hot and cold water plumbing loops” and the “restrictions at the hospital won’t be lifted until tests show the bacteria are gone.”  No details were given, however, of the locations where bacteria were found or how much of the hospital was affected.
