Legionella bacteria were discovered at the prison hospital at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB).
According to spokesman Raul Reyes, the prison hospital which is known as Hospital Galveston conducts monthly testing for Legionella and has not experienced any cases of Legionnaires’ disease, despite the presence of the bacteria. The water supply for Hospital Galveston is separate from the water supply for UTMB’s other hospital.
Deb McGrew, COO of the UTMB Health System, said that medical-grade bacterial filters have since been installed throughout the hospital including ice machines and showers.
UTMB’s other hospitals were already fitted with industrial filters after Legionella were discovered in the water system after Hurricane Ike in 2008.
