The West Texas VA stated that elevated levels of Legionella bacteria were found in their water system. These bacteria can cause Legionnaires’ disease, a form of pneumonia, with symptoms such as fever, headaches, muscle aches, and others.
According to director Michael Keifer, the Legionella problem at the facility began in fall of 2013, and recent retesting showed that the bacteria were still in the water. VA officials say that the water system is currently being flushed with chlorine.
Texas State Health Services have not been able to confirm or deny any cases of Legionnaires’ disease associated with the West Texas VA.
