Executives at the Department of Veterans Affairs received $573,000 in bonuses for reducing the record high backlogged disability claims. However, these celebrations were premature since no problems were actually fixed before bonuses were handed out. A recent Congressional hearing regarding the Legionnaires’ disease outbreak at the Veterans Affairs facility in Pittsburgh brought up the issue of these bonuses. Approximately two years ago during the outbreak, five cases ended in fatalities and yet, Michael Moreland, the regional VA director in Pittsburgh received a bonus of $63,000. Dr. Robert Petzel, the man responsible for the rewarding the bonus claimed during the hearing that he would still give the bonus if he knew then what he knows now.
