Officials from the New Philadelphia City Health Department are investigating a case of Legionnaires’ disease that was reported in New Philadelphia in Schuylkill County, PA. They believe the case is isolated as there have not been any other reports of the disease in the area.
According to Vickie Ionno, City Health Commissioner, the Legionnaires’ disease case was confirmed by laboratory testing and the source of infection remains unknown.
The investigation to identify the source is being led by City Environmental Health Director Lee Finley and Director of Nursing Nichole Bache. It is uncertain where the patient contracted the illness because he had been to multiple places.
“We’re trying to follow a trail. We’ve already been to several places where he had been, and there’s no obvious indication f any of those places being the source. We’ll continue to follow up and monitor this,” said Ionno.
Legionnaires’ disease is a form of pneumonia and is typically contracted when a person breathes in water vapor contaminated with Legionella bacteria. To read more about the causes and symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease, please visit the CDC website.
