Mother Redcaps Care Home for the elderly located in Wallasey was fined £40,000 for failing to minimize the risk of legionella for its residents. When asked for their risk assessment into legionella bacteria, the care home workers said that a risk assessment was not performed. It was also revealed that workers were not regularly noting the boiler temperature and that there was no system in place to track potential outbreaks. The typical temperature range of the water was between 20-45°C, which is the temperature where legionella can multiply.
According to one of the inspectors, it does not appear that any residents or staff members have been exposed to legionella bacteria, however, it is clear that Mother Redcaps Care Home has failed to control the risk of legionella.
