According to the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, 31 cases of Legionnaires’ disease have been reported since July 10; two people who contracted the illness in that time have died.
Most of the cases were reported in the South Bronx neighborhoods of Highbridge, Morrisania, Hunts Point, and Mott Haven.
Dr. Mary Bassett, NYC’s health commissioner has said “We are conducting a swift investigation to determine the source of the outbreak and prevent future cases.” She goes on to say that the health department is “concerned about this unusual increase” in Legionnaires’ disease cases in the South Bronx.
The health department is testing water from cooling towers and other sources in an effort to pinpoint the source of this outbreak.
The most recent Legionnaires’ disease outbreak in the Bronx prior to this occurred in December 2014. Jules Zacher, P.C. was retained for two cases in this December 2014 outbreak.
