According to a health officer at Jefferson County Department of Health, there are currently nine cases of Legionnaires’ disease associated with the outbreak at the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) Hospital.
All nine cases have been linked to the Women’s and Infant’s Center on floors 5, 6, and 7. The most recent case was a man who was visiting the building. So far, two people with confirmed Legionnaires’ disease have died. An investigation is still ongoing to determine if the deaths of these individuals was a direct result of their contracting Legionnaires’ disease.
Legionnaires’ disease is a potentially deadly form of pneumonia. A person can contract the illness when exposed to Legionella bacteria, a waterborne pathogen.
